Logitech X-230 Speakers Review

Although many audio devices have built in speakers or headphones as standard, you can gain a surprising amount of volume as well as quality by adding a relatively inexpensive set of powered speakers. There are lots to choose from, but Logitech’s X-230 speakers are one of the better choices around, hitting the sweet spot between price and performance.

The specs of the speakers are as follows:

  • Satellite speakers: 6 watts RMS x 2
  • Subwoofer: 20 watts RMS
  • Frequency response: 40Hz – 20kHz

The Logitech X-230 are 2.1 speakers, meaning you get stereo speakers with an active subwoofer. The subwoofer in this case is ported, which reduces distortion significantly and gives clean, punchy bass. Any speaker works by vibrating backwards and forwards. In a sealed subwoofer box, the speaker is not as free to vibrate, whereas ported subwoofers have a hole, or port, in the sub box that allows air to move in and out of the enclosure. This in turn increases efficiency as vibrations from both the forward and backward vibration escape the enclosure. It’s important that the port is ‘tuned’ correctly so that the vibrations don’t cancel each other out. Ported subs use less power to produce the same sound, but the downside is that the extra structure increases the size of the speaker enclosure. Logitech have kept this under control, with the subwoofer measuring approximately 6 x 9 x 9 ¼  inches (15 x 22.5 x 23cm), but you may have trouble fitting it in if you have a lot of gear crammed on to a small computer desk.

This leads to another point – just where these speakers are used around the house. Logitech has something of a reputation for producing PC peripherals, and these speakers certainly deliver everything you might want for gaming or MP3 playback. However Logitech have also been establishing themselves as manufacturers of decent quality audio equipment in the last few years. Other reviews of the Logitech X-230 agree, with cnet giving the speakers an average 4 out of 5, based on 46 user reviews. As such, and based on the specs above, these speakers are certainly good enough to take on any audio playback duties around the house. Other uses could include acting as TV speakers, or even standing by ready to connect to your portable MP3 player or even laptop, for impromptu music sessions or lounge room YouTube playback. They can even be used with a gaming console, and are particularly good for a console you might have in a second room, away from your main home theater setup. Prices for the X-230 vary but good deals can be found online with Amazon having them on offer for near the hundred dollar mark and at this price, they offer a deal that is hard to pass up for any audiophile looking for a cost effective way to get great quality audio, anywhere in the house.
