Bose Acoustimass 6 Speakers

Setting up a home theater system in a smaller space can be a challenge. Most surround sound systems call for fairly large speakers to achieve reasonable quality, loud sound, and also mean trailing wires across a room. Of course, there are ways around this, like the use of speaker brackets or a wireless speaker system, but for someone who wants to enjoy the odd movie at home without a complex home theater setup, these may be overkill. Enter the Bose Acoustimass 6 speaker system!

These Bose bookshelf speakers are designed to cater for smaller rooms, or for those with other priorities than just home theater. They come as 5 cube shaped speakers measuring in at a very small 3 x 3 x 4 inches (7.5 x 7.5 x 10cm) – to be placed at the center, front left and right, and rear left and right. Each speaker has a 2.5” driver, which uses Bose’s Direct/Reflecting speaker technology. This system works by directing some of the sound from the speaker directly towards the listening position, but also directing a portion of the sound away from the listening position so that it bounces off your walls and ceiling. The effect of this is to produce a richer, more satisfying sound that some listeners feel has a more ‘live; sounding quality. The Acoustimass 6 surround speaker package is rounded out by a powered module containing a 5.25”/13cm woofer, to which the other speakers are connected.

The Acoustimass system comes with enough speaker cable to position the speakers anywhere in a reasonable sized room with ease, but an optional addon is the SL2 wireless surround adapter. This kit allows the rear speakers to function wirelessly, using 5.8Ghz radio transmission good for 30 feet/10 meters. Connecting the speakers is straight forward, with color coded ports allowing easy identification of what goes where.

Setting up the Acoustimass 6 speakers is straight forward, with a range of possibilities outlined in the manual. The front speakers should be around 2 feet from your TV to eliminate any interference, but at about the level of the screen, with the center speaker being placed directly above or below the screen. The woofer unit can be placed to one side of your TV stand; due to the low frequency it is harder for the human ear to detect the exact location of a woofer. The rear speaker units should be mounted on the walls (or other handy piece of furniture) to the rear and above the listening position. Because of the design of these speakers exact direction is not as important, with sound being directed all around the room.

Although these speakers are compact, they will satisfy many home theater enthusiasts, packing great, rich sound – and fitting into any room almost invisibly.
